Strong, Local Economies

Food Security and Self-Sufficiency

At Hale Puna, we believe that food security is the foundation of a resilient and thriving community. With the help of local farmers, student interns, and dedicated community members, we have transformed a once barren 1.3-acre parcel of land into a thriving food forest.

Today, our Waimea farm hosts over 75 fruit trees, ranging from ʻulu (native breadfruit) and noni to maiʻa (banana) and other Hawaiian canoe plants like kalo, ‘uala, ipu, ‘olena, wauke, and ko. Alongside these cherished traditional crops, we also nurture modern arrivals like mango, liliko‘i, avocado, papaya, cacao, jackfruit, fig, and citrus. This blend of old and new ensures that we not only honor our rich agricultural heritage but also diversify our food sources for future generations.

Our farm is more than just a source of food. It is a place of learning and growth. Through internships, we provide young people from West Kaua‘i and Niihau with hands-on experience in sustainable agriculture. Our out-of-school programs give children a chance to explore the world of agriculture, encouraging curiosity and respect for nature while developing practical skills that promote self-sufficiency.

Empowering Our Community Through Employment

At Hale Puna, we believe that meaningful work has the power to transform lives and uplift entire communities. Located on the west side of Kaua‘i, a region often overlooked and underserved, we are dedicated to creating well-paying jobs for those who face significant barriers to employment. Our organization, primarily through our location at Kōkeʻe Lodge, provides flexible work schedules tailored to the unique needs of single parents and individuals who have traditionally struggled to find stable employment. By offering support and opportunity, we foster resilience and hope in our community.

Through our programs, we’re not just providing jobs—we’re building a stronger, more cohesive community. The individuals we employ bring immense talent and determination, and their work plays a vital role in preserving our island’s rich heritage. Together, we’re showing that when people are given the chance to succeed, they can change their own lives and help create a brighter future for everyone on Kaua‘i’s west side.

Farm Tour (currently under development)

Our Weekly Farmers' Market provides a space for local farmers and artisans to sell their produce and handmade goods. As the only market on the island to accept SNAP/EBT and DaBux, we ensure fresh, healthy food is accessible to all, supporting food security for underserved families. Our market hosts 9 to 12 vendors weekly, providing locally grown products to both residents and visitors, fostering a vibrant local food economy on Kaua'i’s west side.
